Oracle XE database can be downloaded from this link. Before you can start to download Oracle XE database you would need to create an user account in Oracle web site. To create the account you will need to provide some of your personal data, but it is for free and you can receive free update information from Oracle about the Oracle products. The site offers you to download either Windows or Linux version of Oracle XE database. The XE database is an open source version and available for free for only personal use. To learn to write Oracle SQL statements for use examples from this Oracle DBA site and for learning this database version is a perfect choice. In addition, Oracle XE database can be easily integrated with Oracle SQL Developer tool. Oracle XE database has a simple build-in script to start and to shutdown so the database don’t have to work all the time and consume your computer memory. Once the database is installed and started you can open from the installed link your administration page. The page looks as on the following picture.
Note that to Windows users the Oracle database installing process has been made quite easy. You will be guided through all the installation process by the Windows wizard and you would only need to set the database administrator passwords. Creating users and giving permissions can be done using the same web administration window above. To start the Oracle XE database click on “Start Database” button. The starting process will open a blank window and now you are ready to open the SQLPlus command using link “Run SQL Command Line“.
Once you are done with the XE Oracle database then it would be wise to shutdown it. This way you will save your computer performance and other processes would not become too slow. Of course, when you need the database frequently then you don’t have to shutdown it at all.
Your Oracle XE database will be shutdown when the following message will appear on your screen. You can just close the windows and we are done.
Please note the additional options in the Oracle XE start menu are “Backup Database” and “Restore Database“. The tools are quite straight forward to use and we do hope you would never have to use the restore database, but doing backups are quite important when you have done loads of work with your XE database and you want to make sure you wouldn’t loose it with some strange database accident.
